What is…Wellness Coaching?

Defining Wellness Coaching is like trying to catch smoke, every time I think I have a great definition all nailed down, it dissipates and slips through my fingers.

What I’ll do on this page is give a general overview of coaching as a profession, then highlight how we can bring those attributes to bear on your overall wellness. First, a general definition of coaching from the International Coach Federation:

Coaching is partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.

For me coaching is deeper than this. It’s a natural extension of the role I was already playing in many folks’ lives without knowing it. I’m there to help my clients see that they are the expert on their lives – where they are now, where they want to get, and how to get there.

The process of coaching is one of discovery. My role as coach is to gently guide you, as my client, on your journey and help you see that you are in fact the expert on you and your life. Your role as the client is to endeavor to gather as much information as you need in order to effect the changes required to achieve YOUR best self. Everyone’s definition of wellness will differ, working together we take it as our job to find the definition that works for you.

You can expect several things working with me. First, I give my full self to each session. In return I expect you to come prepared for each session. You can expect weekly assignments, challenges from me to push you to find your best.

You can expect to discuss these assignments in depth each week. Expect no distractions during our sessions. Expect that since our sessions are only an average of one hour per week, the majority of the work involved in coaching will take place outside of these sessions.

You can expect to learn a lot about your behaviors, how to affect changes to them, and maybe some of the reasons behind them. You can also expect a calm, safe environment in which to relax into our sessions.

Coaching is about YOU. My role as coach is to help you see your way to your best self.
